Selecting a correctly sized helmet is an essential component of motorcycle safety. Yet, many people do not know how to select the helmet that is best suited to the size of their heads. In fact, most people tend to select helmets that are too large and will not provide them with much protection if they are involved in an accident. Sizing a motorcycle helmet is very easy and it won’t take you very long to do, plus it can save your life.

Things to Look for When Sizing Your Motorcycle Helmet

The most important rule to remember when selecting the correctly sized motorcycle helmet is that it should fit snugly on your head. At the same time, it shouldn’t be so tight that it feels uncomfortable and cannot be worn for longer than 10 or 15 minutes.

In order to accurately determine the helmet size that is right for you, you should measure your head with a cloth measuring tape. Be certain to measure about ½ inch to an inch above your eyebrow, just over your ears and at a point in the back of your head that results in the largest possible measurement. Measure it a couple of times so you can get an average and consistent size for your head. You can measure in inches or centimeters.

Whether you are able to measure the circumference of your head or not, it is a good idea to try on a few helmets in order to determine the size that is best suited for you. If a helmet is the proper size, it should provide uniform pressure around your head and on your cheeks. The pressure the helmet places on your cheeks should be enough to make your cheeks squeeze in slightly so you are almost biting the inside of your cheek.

Things to Avoid When Selecting the Properly Sized Motorcycle Helmet

When trying on helmets, there are a few things to look for that will indicate that the helmet is too large. For example, if the helmet slides on easily, keep in mind that this means it will come off easily during an impact as well and means it won’t provide much protection if you are in an accident. In addition, you should not be able to easily twist the helmet from side to side. If you grab the chin of the helmet and move it from side to side, your skin should move along with the helmet.

Another area to check is where the helmet meets your forehead. If you can fit your finger in this area, the helmet is too loose and may actually get pulled off your head by the wind as you ride. Similarly, you should not be able to pull the front of the helmet down on your face so it covers your eyes or so the chin piece is below your chin.

If the motorcycle helmet feels too tight on your head, your head does not touch the top of the helmet, you can’t pull the helmet down completely over your ears or if it’s painful in any way then you should get the next size larger.

Taking your time to find a helmet size that is the right one for you is an essential part of motorcycle safety. Even if you plan to purchase your helmet online, it is a good idea to try on helmets at a store if possible in order to get a general idea about which size to purchase. Try on different styles of helmets since different name brands may fit the head differently. While measuring your head is the starting point for the sizing procedure, remember that due to varying shapes, heads that are apparently the same size when measured by a tape may not necessarily fit the same size helmet. Helmets also vary in shape. Some are oval while others are more round. This will make a difference!

If you are a novice motorcycle rider and are eager to get your first bike, there are things you should include along with the purchase of your new motorcycle. Things like the proper clothing and safety apparel can make the difference between an accident and a tragic accident.

You will need to set aside a substantial sum to ensure you have all the necessary equipment you will need to make riding a motorcycle a safe endeavor. Sacrificing price for good riding gear may cost you more in medical costs in the long run.

The first thing you will need is a good, sturdy helmet. This will protect your head and face if you should fall off your motorcycle for any reason. A fall off a motorcycle going at high speeds can prove fatal if you are not wearing a proper helmet. There are many places that do not require riders to wear helmets, but it is a good idea to wear one at all times for your own safety and continued well being.

You are sure to have noticed people involved in the sport of motorcycle riding wearing an abundance of leather. Those who are not familiar with the sport tend to think that riders are trying to project an “outlaw” image. The clothing that is worn when you are riding should be comfortable, safe, and for your protection. Leather is tough as well as durable and can offer you the maximum protection should you have a riding mishap.

Wearing gloves is also a good idea. When you fall from your motorcycle, you are likely to use your hands to break your fall. If you are wearing a good pair of motorcycle gloves, you can prevent road rash on your hands.

A full-length pair of motorcycle boots that are also hard is also a must for those who intend to do a lot of riding. Sneakers are not recommended for motorcycle riding. It is best to have boots to limit any leg or foot injuries you may suffer from a fall. They also give you extra inch or more, so when you are stopped, your feet can more readily reach the ground.

Wearing a leather jacket that has vents is a good idea. In the summer, you can open the vents to allow the air to circulate to keep you from becoming overheated. If you ride in the winter too, you can easily add a lining to add more protection from the cold. If you should ever have the misfortune to go down while riding your motorcycle, you will be thankful you had the foresight to be wearing leather.

You can purchase any or all of these items if you shop online. Shopping online is simple and you can view several prices for any items you wish to purchase to ensure you are paying the lowest prices for the best quality. It is always best to protect yourself with the proper riding apparel when you go out on a motorcycle. It can be dangerous, but you can do all that is possible to protect yourself from serious injury by wearing the proper clothing.

When people think about the image of a biker, one of the first things they think about besides the tattoos is the stereotypical black riding boots. In years past you would never see a biker out for a cruise without his boots. These days with the popularity of sport bikes and what we call “rice rockets” you see people riding them with tennis shoes on and you will see business people riding their motorcycle to work with dress loafers on. For hardcore bikers, this may seem to be sacrilegious but it is happening more and more. So, are riding boots really a functional necessity or just for looks?

If you have the nerve to walk up to a biker and ask him if his boots are functional or just for looks and whether they would ride their bike without them you will find that they would not get on their bike without their boots. Though you may be hard pressed to get an in depth explanation from them if you push a little they will tell you that while they like the look of their boots, the main reason they wear them is for protection.

Harness Motorcycle Boots

There are inherent risks that we take when participating in biking but wearing motorcycle boots eliminates many of them. One of the first injuries that many bikers get is a burned leg from their own exhaust. This is a horrible injury that can take several weeks to heal and will still result in a large scar. By wearing the tall riding boots you are much less likely to be burned.

Of course there are many other reasons for wearing protective footwear, leathers, and helmets not the least of which is the risk of injury from being involved in an accident. Wearing thick leather pants and jackets can save your skin if you lay your bike down in an accident and the boots will save your feet. A helmet should always be worn, even if you don’t think it is cool. I have seen several people who have died in minor accidents because of head injuries that would have been avoided if they had worn a helmet.

Even though bikers will say that their reason for wearing the boots is mostly for protection, the classic biker look is a reason as well. I have friends who wear their biker gear even if they are driving their trucks. If you were to bring up the example of a sport bike rider wearing tennis shoes, they will tell you that observation makes their point that those people aren’t real bikers. Let’s face it some guy with a flashy windbreaker and tennis shoes riding a little rice rocket doesn’t make you want to lock your doors when he rides by, now does he?
